Why You Must Stop Letting Fortune Control Your Life

2025/06/18

The Illusion of Control Over Your Fate

Imagine a world where the stars are bound by perfect laws—where the sun rules the sky, and even the moon knows its place. Every season, every force of nature obeys an eternal order. Yet, here we are, humans, trapped in a chaotic world driven by chance and the whims of fortune. While everything around us follows a clear path, our lives can change in an instant, often without reason.

Why are we the only beings left to face uncertainty? Why should our actions be subject to random twists of fate while the universe around us moves in harmony?

Why The Masses Are Wrong About Happiness

Most people believe that our lives are left to fate or chance. They embrace the chaos, hoping that fortune will smile upon them, or they resign themselves to suffering when it doesn't. They brag about status or heritage as if it shields them from life's randomness, but in reality, even the highest pedigree can't escape the harsh swings of luck.

Living for momentary pleasures, driven by fleeting desires, leads only to anxiety, regret, and a cycle of never-ending dissatisfaction. People chase physical indulgence as though it will fulfill them, but these desires lead them no further than animals, driven purely by instinct.

The Advantage of Seeing Through the Illusion

When you understand that pleasure and status are illusions, you gain control. You rise above the fickleness of fortune by living with purpose, not by pursuing temporary highs. True joy comes not from external conditions, but from mastering your mind and aligning your actions with something higher.

By not attaching your happiness to luck, indulgence, or external validation, you become untouchable. You're no longer at the mercy of the world’s chaos. You move in tune with the deeper, eternal laws of nature—laws that grant you freedom, resilience, and inner peace.

Your Path to Mastering Fortune

  1. Detach from External Outcomes: Stop relying on status, fortune, or temporary pleasures for your happiness. Journal each day about what truly drives your actions.

  2. Align with Eternal Values: Focus on discipline, growth, and wisdom rather than fleeting desires. Identify one area of life where you're chasing temporary satisfaction, and replace it with a long-term goal.

  3. Master Your Mind: Spend 10 minutes daily in reflection or meditation, observing how external events affect you. Begin reclaiming control of your emotional responses.

Challenge:

For the next 7 days, practice gratitude only for internal gains—growth in character, knowledge, or discipline—rather than any external success or fortune. Keep track of how your mindset shifts.

Reference: Research on the Hedonic Treadmill highlights how humans adapt to pleasure and external success. No matter the highs we achieve—whether through material wealth, status, or fleeting indulgence—our happiness levels eventually return to a baseline. True fulfillment comes from within, not from chasing temporary external rewards. (Brickman, P., & Campbell, D. T. (1971). "Hedonic Relativism and Planning the Good Society.")
